Asclepius in contrapposto on an oval base plate. The muscular body clothed in a chiton, which is wound around the hips and draped over the left shoulder. The lines of the folds skilfully wrought. The anatomical details of the body are extremely lifelike, intricately carved, together with the footwear. His right arm bent at an angle, broken away at the centre of the forearm. This hand originally held the staff entwined with the serpent, remnants of which can still be seen on the base plate. His left arm, almost fully flexed, is held downwards where it is connected to his body via a crosspiece. The hand is lost. His head meticulously carved with facial features, beard and hair. A few drill holes visible in places. The exceptionally admirable finish of the highly polished figure not applied to the head. The slightly rough surfacepared to the rest of the statue suggests it was reworked in antiquity, also accounting for the short, thickset neck. A modern replacement can be ruled out owing to the homogeneous sinter deposits. Mounted on a modern pedestal. Height without pedestal 31 cm, with pedestal 32.5 cm. Exceptionally exquisite marble statuette, high aesthetic quality. Provenance: South German private collection. Condition: II +Provenance: South German private collection.
