A Tibetan gilt bronze figure of Padmasambhava , 16-17th century, seated on a double lotus throne, holding a vajra in his right hand and a kapala and kalasa in his left hand, a loop for his staff (now missing) on his chest wearing a lama's cap with sun and moon emblem, with vajra finial, 17cm high The legendary Indian Buddhist teacher Padmasambhava is known as Guru Rinpoche to Tibetans. Padmasambhava is recognizable by the iconic peaked Indian cap of a pandita, with a sun and moon emblem, as well as his furrowed brow and the wide, almond-shaped eyes which set him apart as a foreigner.
