Blue-and-white underglaze red first appeared in the Yuan Dynasty. It is a copper-red glaze with painted decorations between blue and white, and it is fired with a high-temperature reduction flame. From the Kangxi Dynasty to the Qianlong Dynasty, the techniques gradually matured. 青花釉裡紅始見於元代，乃是以銅紅釉在青花間加繪點飾，經高溫還原焰燒成。至康熙時，釉裡紅呈色漸趨穩定，青花釉裡紅之燒造亦見成熟，已可表現大幅山川景象與人物故事場面。雍正時，青花釉裡紅器愈顯爐火純青，層次分明，不見渾濁、浸漫，成一王之神貌，尤開一代風氣之先。乾隆朝，青花釉裡紅燒製更見隨心，題材豐足，構圖繁複，且畫工求精求細，甚得後人稱譽。
