GU HONG (18th century) Lady at her Dressing Table, 1754PROPERTY FROM AN IMPORTANT NEW ENGLAND COLLECTIONGU HONG (18th century)Lady at her Dressing Table, 1754Hanging scroll, ink and color on silk, inscribed by the artist with a dedication, dated jiaxu and signed Gu Hong, with three artist's seals. This charming depiction of a lady placing an orchid flower in her hair is reminiscent of the Song Dynasty fan painting Lady at Her Dressing Table in a Garden by Su Hanchen (act. 1120's-1160's), now in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. In both paintings we see two views of the subject, one from behind, and one of her face, reflected in the mirror. This approach can also be found in one of the earliest Chinese figure paintings, Gu Kaizhi's (345-406) Admonitions scroll. In Gu Hong's version, the subject is seated at a table, with a tiered box and a blue and white porcelain jarlet, with the mirror on a cloud form stand. The cut wisteria blooms in the vase provides a seasonal aspect to the painting, indicating the scene is set in summer.
