潞城县，今为山西省长治市潞城区，位于晋冀鲁豫交通要冲。晓然，河北赞皇人，清光绪四年任潞城知县。笃，山西乡宁人，为近代方志界名家。是志始修于光绪五年，初稿甫成，晓然以病卸任，光绪九年程达天任知府重加修订，翌年完稿，记事止于光绪十年。全志设图、谱、考、记、录、杂述六类，下列历代地名谱、贡举谱、田赋考、学制考、风土记、书籍记、金石记、乡贤录等十九门。卷首收疆域图，山川图，城池图，乡镇图等二十余幅。此志体例简明，内容丰富，文笔雅洁，为潞城县志中的佳作。
