余姚，即今浙江余姚市，已有2200多年建县历史。是虞世南、王守仁、黄宗羲等人故乡，有河姆渡遗址。 是志创修于清光绪十九年，至二十五年始成。此志修在“中外合一，见闻日异，新学繁兴，译书毕集，于四洲风气顿更乎畴昔”，且在太平天国之乱后，余姚并无修志，则此本能补战乱之变及时世之异。又搜罗天一阁等处藏书，考订古今成此编。体例分图版、疆域、山川、城池、风俗、物产、祥异、水利、田赋、学校、兵制、祭典、金石、古迹、职官、列女等。卷首各里详图约十幅。
