Ca. 200-300 AD. A schist-carved sculpture of a bodhisattva, possibly Padmapani, depicted in a serene seated position. The graceful folds of his sanghati, a traditional draped garment, envelop his body, creating an aura of elegance and poise. From his neck hang heavy necklaces, accentuating his ethereal beauty. His round face is graced with delicate features, with almond-shaped eyes that exude a sense of tranquility, a broad nose, and closed lips that hint at the contemplative nature of his being. His arched brows evoke a sense of wisdom and introspection. The elongated ears, a symbol of his all-hearing nature, are adorned with precious jewels. Crowning the head of this divine figure is an elaborate headpiece with intricate details and delicate features. The reverse of the sculpture is flat and unworked, emphasizing the intricacy of the carving on the front. Bodhisattvas are revered figures in Buddhist tradition, known for their compassion and dedication to the welfare of others. They are believed to have attained enlightenment but choose to remain in the world to help others achieve the same state. Padmapani, in particular, is revered as a compassionate being who helps alleviate the suffering of all sentient beings. Size: L:395mm / W:180mm ; 9.41kgProvenance: Private London collection; acquired in Japan between 2000 - 2005; formerly in an old Japanese collection.
