Ca. 400-350 BC. A black glaze pottery dish, with a broad and shallow body that rises gracefully from a low concave foot. Its surface shimmers with a rich and lustrous glaze, save for the interior of the foot which reveals the natural cream-colored pottery beneath. In the hands of the ancient Greeks, pottery was not merely a vessel for storing or serving food, but an art form that reflected their culture and values. This black-glazed dish, with its exquisite form and stunning glaze, was a prime example of the Greek penchant for elegance and refinement. The dish's shallow body made it ideal for serving a variety of foods, from fruits and nuts to olives and cheeses, while its low foot kept it stable on any surface. The rich black glaze not only added an element of drama and sophistication, but also protected the delicate pottery from wear and tear.Size: L:40mm / W:150mm ; 180gProvenance: Property of a central London Gallery; formerly in a South English estate collection; acquired in the 1990s from Andre de Munter, Brussels, Belgium; previously in and old European collection.
