Ca. 300 BC. A terracotta unguentarium, featuring an elongated spindle-shaped body with a sloping shoulder and a tall, hollowed stem. The tall, slightly spreading neck culminates in a projecting rim with a bevelled lip. In the Hellenistic world, spindle vessels were a popular and practical means of storing and dispensing unguent, oils, and perfumes. The elongated spindle shape was ideally suited for ensuring the safe and efficient transport of these precious commodities, while the tall neck allowed for easy pouring and dispensing. The present unguentarium exemplifies the Hellenistic aesthetic and technical virtuosity. Its elegant form reflects the sophisticated tastes of the Hellenistic elite, while its functional design underscores the practical concerns of everyday life.
