AUTEL DE SUVIDHINATA EN LAITON AVEC INCRUSTATION D'ARGENTINDE, GUJARAT, DATÉ 145029.2 cm ( 11 1/2 in.) highProvenance: A SILVER INLAID BRASS SHRINE OF SUVIDHINATAINDIA, GUJARAT, DATED 1450印度 古吉拉特邦 1450年 銅錯銀蘇毘提那陀像Published:Jan van Alphen,Steps to Liberation: 2,500 Years of Jain Art and Religion, 2000, p. 158, no. 83.Exhibited:Steps to Liberation: 2,500 years of Jain Art and Religion, Etnografisch Museum, Antwerpen, 26 May - 15 October, 2000.Provenance:With Claude de Marteau, Brussels, by 1970sThis large cast stele depicts Suvidhinata, the ninth Tirthankara, enthroned as the central figure. Seated underneath a parasol on an elaborate throne decorated by elephants and confronting lions, the enlarged Tirthankara is surrounded by twenty-four minute Jinas in an arrangement known as acaubis-jina-pata, which invokes his heavenly palace. Certain elements, such as the detailed latticework, silver-inlaid throne back, and the anthropomorphic forms of the nine planets (navagraha) with Shantidevi below the central figure, all stress the importance and refinement of this stele. The inscription along the back of the figure records the date of this figure's installation asVikrama Samvat 1506, which corresponds to 1450 in the western calendar. See another closely dated example with this arrangement sold at Christie's, Mumbai, 18 December 2016, lot 68.
