In 1949, he participated in the restoration work of Lu Xun Academy of Arts and Letters, and served as the deputy director of the Department of Fine Arts. The Central Academy of Fine Arts was established in 1950. He successively served as the director and professor of the Department of Applied Art, and the director of the Department of Chinese Painting. He also established the first interior design and exhibition design majors in China. He painted a group of cartoon portraits for cultural figures in Yan'an, and his technique was exaggerated, which was criticized; he made friends with poet Seke and singer Du Yajia, and was called "Three Monsters of Yan'an" at the time. In 1940, his work was published in "China Today" edited by Ye Qianyu in Hong Kong.
