砚作长方形，砚面平整。砚首雕一对夔龙环形提手为钟钮，夔龙雕琢精细流畅，以钟腹为砚面，淌池式，砚面余部雕水波纹，砚背开覆手，内刻赵孟頫《即事三绝 其二》：“古墨轻磨满几香，研池新浴照人光。北窗时有凉风至，闲写黄庭一两章。”镌款“张”
张廷玉，字衡臣，康熙三十年进士，官至保和殿大学士、军机大臣，太子太保，正一品。历任三朝，居官50年。卒谥“文和”。著《澄怀堂文集》。
