Greek, Boeotian mid-7th cent. B.C. Clay.
H. 5 5/16 in; 13.5 cm
The figure of a seated woman with a nearly board-like body, her garment becoming indistinguishable with the throne she sits in, supported in the rear by a single strut. The face is characterized by a distinctive projecting nose. The once painted eyes are no longer visible. The figure wears a low, conical polos on its head, from which two plastically offset strands of hair fall down over the shoulders on either side. Two short, laterally projecting arms, bent at the elbow and like the garment becoming indistinguishable with the arms of the throne. Patterns and details painted in dark brown matt glaze once enlivened the garment, the face, and the polos.
Considerable surface wear left marks on the front of the garment.
Formerly priv. coll. M. M., Germany. Thereafter priv. coll. Dr. Frank Hieronymus (1930-2022), Basel; acquired 13.11.2012 from Galleria Serodine, Ascona.
