Western Greek or Etruscan 5th cent. B.C. Bronze.
H. 8 31/32 in; 22.8 cm. Dm. max. 6 27/64 in; 16,3 cm
Flat, slightly oval disc with a broad tang to attach it to the original handle which was probably made of wood or bone. The obverse was polished and served as a mirror. On the reverse, the rim is slightly angled and decorated with a bead pattern and kymation. The picture field is framed by an engraved lotus-palmette frieze and a band of hatched triangles. A hanging palmette above the tang. Above it, a double spiral and four palmette leaves in the interstices below a double line. In the middle of the reverse a central dot that was necessary for the production process.
A small, superficial hole next to the double spiral, otherwise intact. The bronze on the obverse shimmers through the intense green patina in places. Slight areas of encrustation.
Formerly Basel art market, Münzen und Medaillen A.G., 1961 (publ.: Auction 22, 13 May 1961, no. 81, illus.). Thereafter priv. coll. of the publisher M. Hagemann, Basel. Thence by descent in the family.
