Hellenistic, Eastern Greek (?) 4th-1st cent. B.C. Marble.
H. 6 29/64 in; 16.4 cm
Head of a youth with short, partly sickle-shaped, partly wavy curls of hair. The hair forms an almost linear contour around the forehead and temples. Oval, heavy face with striking almond-shaped eyes reminiscent of Archaic sculpture. Large mouth with full lower lip. On top of the head a rectangular cutout, probably for an attachment in a different material such as metal or stucco; hair roughened in the surrounding area. A long curl of hair (?) at the left cheek. The cutout for an attachment above the forehead suggests that the youth might be Actaeon with stag antlers.
Left side of neck roughly worked. Nose and part of the chin lost. Hair at the top of the head slightly worn.
Priv. coll. Dr. Frank Hieronymus (1930-2022), Basel.
