Roman 1st-2nd cent. A.D. Marble.
a) L. 5 3/64 in; 12.8 cm b) L. 5 5/8 in; 14.3 cm
a) Fragment from the front of a sarcophagus with about a third of a tondo with a boy's head. The head evinces clear stylistic and iconographic parallels to portraits from the Domitian Period. At the top right of the frame the right hand of a figure presenting the tondo has been preserved. b) Relief fragment of a right arm partly covered in a cloak. The hand rests in front of the chest, some tunic folds below it. Probably part of a larger relief with figures.
a) Reverse roughly smoothed, with pick marks; upper edge smoothed. b) Reverse partially concave, roughly smoothed.
Formerly priv. coll., York, acquired in the 1990s and 2000s. London art market, 2018.
