是书为英国哲学家、社会学家斯宾塞《社会学研究》中文译本首版，严复译并定名《群学肆言》。严复提出“信、达、雅”翻译标准，亲赴西方学习语言、社会科学，归国后翻译一大批西方经典学术名著，包括赫胥黎《天演论》、亚当史密斯《原富》、斯宾塞《群学肆言》等。其主旨在于传播西方强国的政治、经济思想和科学精神，在当时的思想界引起极大震撼。民国四年七月黎锦熙就曾嘱托其学生***精读本书。
