是书评者张新之自道光八年(1828)开始写评，至三十年(1850)始完成，无力出版，后归刘铨福，至同治六年(1867)，孙桐生在刘处见到此书，大为赞赏，竭十年之力整理并用程甲本校勘，至光绪二年(1876)完成，出版此书。此本对后来的其他评本产生了很大的影响，也是有关“红学”研究中的一部存世较少见的刻本。
