In his early years, he focused on meticulous brushwork, while in his later years, he favored the use of freehand brushwork, allowing his brush to move freely and blending ink and colors to create richly romantic poetic scenes. He was skilled in calligraphy and had a keen eye for art appreciation. Xie Zhiliu held personal art exhibitions in various cities including Chengdu, Chongqing, Kunming, Xi'an, and Shanghai.
