砚为旧瓦当改制，以旧瓦改砚历来为文人墨客所喜好，意表好古之心取其古朴之趣。此瓦当原应是北魏莲花琉璃瓦，瓦当头部浮雕莲花纹，外施绿釉，釉面大多脱落。后经明人改造，于拱背上凿以砚池，落“嵉砚斋”铭，并题词“只留圆寸地，好教子孙耕•结翰墨缘”；“翰墨缘”是李兆生弘仁宗风的一部巨著，又名“中华笔砚衡真”，讲述了中国文化的博大精深。借以此希望后人能够领会。
