Confederate general (1821–1904) who distinguished himself at Bull Run, Fredericksburg, and Chickamauga, and is remembered as one of the Civil War's greatest tacticians. ALS, one page, 5.5 x 8.5, November 19, 1888. Letter written from Gainesville, Georgia, to Charles Morris, the editor of 'Decisive Events in the Story of the Great Republic,' published in 1892. In part: "From our interviews while in Washington…it occurred to me…that I should leave the Mss: our ideas being quite apart. It would be better therefore to return the papers as soon as convenient, for I don't see how I may abridge them so as to meet your views." Morris dockets the letter at the top, noting that the general's papers were returned a few weeks later. In fine condition, with light creasing, and a short tear, to the bottom edge.
