An attractive and well-made Korean War USAF private purchase field/flight jacket, produced in-theater, with olive drab woolen hem and cuffs, featuring a unit patch for the 6147th Tactical Control Group (TCG). The jacket has a large “Crown” marked front zipper with wool-lined collar, and matching wool inner lining. The jacket was fashioned from heavy olive drab canvas cloth, and machine-stitched with tan thread. The cuffs and hem are lightly frayed, and exhibit some minor insect damage as well. The jacket has a theater-made 5th Air Force patch (the loops for the left sleeve pen holders were added over the patch), and a large circular “Mosquito” patch of the 6147th TCG on the left breast; the patch depicts a bandaged mosquito with radio gear, pointing the way for a trio of F-80 Shooting Stars flying above. An embroidered name strip is hand-stitched onto the right breast: “Don. Lablanc / [Hangul letters].” Apart from the minor damage to the cuffs and hem, the exterior of the jacket is in excellent, little-used condition, and the interior lining is likewise in fine shape without any noticeable tears, rips, or holes. The 6147th TCG was formed to provide airborne forward air control for to support infantry operations on the ground. The group was composed of four squadrons, and flew the LT-6 'Mosquito' air control and observation variant of the venerable T-6 'Texan' training aircraft. The group was disbanded not long after hostilities ceased, since slow-moving observation planes were deemed obsolete in the new jet dominated battlefield, but the concept was resurrected during Vietnam. A great piece of Korean War history.
