2nd-3rd century AD. A bronze two-part statuette of a rider and his mount; the rider in cuirass with incised ring detailing (mailcoat?), flared tunic covered legs and feet, mantle to the shoulders and quiver to the back, youthful clean-shaven face with centre-parted hair, left hand extended (to hold reins) and right hand raised (to hold a spear); horse in advancing pose with one foreleg raised, incised chain to the neck with crescent pendants, rectangular base with stub feet. Cf. Rolland, H. Bronzes Antiques de Haute Provence, Paris, 1965, items 116, 246. 134 grams total, 89mm (3 1/2"). Ex Horton collection; formerly in a 1990s Somerset, UK, collection. Very fine condition.
