1st-2nd century AD. A bronze harness mount, discoid with staple to the reverse, openwork design showing the she-wolf with head lowered suckling the two twins, Romulus and Remus, the founders of Rome, with foliage above the wolf's back, baseline with s-scroll below; mounted on a custom-made stand. See Appels, A. & Laycock, S. Roman Buckles and Military Fittings, Witham, 2007 for discussion. 71 grams, 11cm including stand (4 1/4"). Property of a London gentleman; acquired by his father in the 1970s; thence by descent. Very fine condition. Extremely rare.
