A bone tubular pyxis, collar to the top and bottom; carved to the centre with standing figure of Apollo holding lyre, head turned looking to seated and bound figure of Marsyas, arms behind back; in front of Marsyas a flaming altar to the front; in front a standing naked male holding a scroll, possibly Mercury. 57 grams, 62mm (2 3/4"). Property of a gentleman living in central London; previously in an old UK collection; acquired in the 1970s and 1980s. Fine condition, base and lid absent.
