1st-2nd century AD. A bronze ewer with bulbous body, widening to the shoulder, round-section tapering neck with narrow spout, separately cast splayed foot decorated with repoussé band of lotus petals; the body decorated with repoussé fauna and flora detail comprising a band of lotus petals; a scene featuring wicker baskets, an anchor, ducks, shells, fish and a snake; a border of animals including a lion and a gazelle; lotus petals radiating from the neck; the handle with high arching D-section shank, to the body a facing mask of a boy with wavy hair in relief, atop the rim a winged figure with youthful face, curved body and zoomorphic lower body, the arms terminating with hooves to the rim. 699 grams, 29cm (11 1/2"). From the collection of a European gentleman living in South London; previously with Pierre Bergé & Associés, Archéologie, Paris, 16 December 2015, lot 215 (22,000-25,000 euros); formerly in the collection of S.
