Translation provided by Youdao
11th century AD. A bronze stirrup mount of Williams's Class B Type 1 with tongue-shaped plaque, pierced lug above, bear's head modelled in the half-round with incised panels and two lateral 'wing', ledge to the reverse pierced in two places for attachment. Cf. Williams, D. Late Saxon Stirrup-Strap Mounts, York, 1997, items 406, 407. 19 grams, 41mm (1 3/4"). From an old North Country collection; formed between 1970-2000. The majority of the mounts of this class feature three bears' heads. The present example has simplified the two upper heads into claw or wing-shaped elements, a feature also found on an example from Tarrant Rushton, Dorset (Williams's item 407"). Fine condition.
