18th-19th century AD. A carved green banded chalcedony appliqué gorgoneion or mask of Medusa with serpent-body band beneath the chin, wings above the brow. 18 grams, 33mm (1 1/4"). Property of a London gentleman; acquired by his father in the 1970s; thence by descent. Dr Bonewitz notes: 'An exceedingly nice piece with very skilled use of the stone's natural colour zoning and highly skilled carving.' Very fine condition.
