Description
Translation provided by Youdao
1801-1825 AD. A hollow ovoid glass paperweight (or finial?) with finely-cut ornament including swags, rosettes, meshes and other detailing, Cyrillic 'A' over 'I' monogram to one side (for Alexander I) and on the opposing side a concave lens framing the resultant reduced image of the monogram. 191.1 grams, 93mm (3 1/2"). From a Swiss collector; acquired from Poland in 2016. Alexander I was Emperor of Russia between 1801 and 1825; he was the first Russian King of (partitioned) Poland from 1815 to 1825, and the first Russian Grand Duke of Finland from 1809 to 1825. He is remembered for having formed and broken alliances with many major European powers, especially Britain and France. The French invasion of Alexander's territory in 1812 was a huge defeat for Napoleon, owing more to the rigours of the Russian winter than any competence on the part of the Tsar or his commanders. [No Reserve] Very fine condition.
