Published 1677 AD. Translated into English by Clement Edmonds (1567?-1622), fifth edition, entitled The Commentaries of C. Julius Caesar of his Wars in Gallia and the Civil Wars betwixt him and Pompey, printed by Tho. Newcomb for Jonathon Edwin at the Three Roses, Ludgatestreet, 1677; Observations upon Caesar's Commentaries of the Civil Wars betwixt Him and Pompey, printed by Tho. Newcomb for Jonathan Edwyn, MDCCLXVI and A Continuation of the Wars in Gallia, by same printer but dated 1676, concluding with The Manner of Our Modern Training, or Tactick Practice, being an essay on military tactics suitable for 'modern' (17th century) usage; [red/black and black titles (3); preface (unpaginated) including a leaf of publisher's advertisements of other works, 12pp; Life and other matters (unpaginated), 36pp.; text 332pp; folding plate at p.298]; folio, modern full calf binding with gilt-lettered spine label by Salisbury Bookbinders (with invoice 28 January 2003 and costing £190"). STC C200; ESTC R16632; Cockle 71; Moss I:241; see Brueggemann, 519-20. 1.5 kg, 31.5 x 21cm (12 1/2 x 8 1/4"). Property of an Essex collector; ex libris Dr Brian Poole Collection, Salisbury, Wiltshire, UK; acquired 2002; formerly Bishop's Palace Library, Salisbury. The Commentaries of Julius Caesar have long been an important text in military training and this work is one of the earliest English translations to have been prepared; Clement Edmond(e)s was a government official, widely respected for his knowledge of military theory, he was Member of Parliament for Oxford University in 1621 and then appointed Secretary of State; this is the second, expanded edition published after his death. Good condition; some browning and minor paper faults, a few contemporary ink notes, one engraved plate present. Scarce early translation.
