Hans von Aachen (1552-1615), Joseph Haintz (1564-1609) oder Hans Rottenhammer (1564-1625), das sind die berühmtesten Maler, die in den Jahren um 1600 im Auftrag des Prager Kaisers Rudolf II. kleinformatige Gemälde auf kostbaren Steinen anfertigten. Meist sind dies außergewöhnliche Kalksteine, die unter dem Überbegriff 'Alabaster' bekannt sind, aber auch Schiefersteine oder - besonders eindrucksvoll - Lapislazuli. Deren auffällige Verfärbungen und Maserungen waren Anregung und Ausgangspunkt der Darstellungen. Die glatte und harte Oberfläche der Steine erlaubte eine besonders feine Maltechnik, bei der auch die Farbigkeit des Materials in den Bildaufbau mit einbezogen wurde. Bei der hier vorliegenden Platte ergibt sich die Höhle, in der die Hirten das Christuskind anbeten, aus den Schwüngen der Steinmaserung.

Diese besondere Art der Malerei, besonders auch in ihrer Kostbarkeit, erlebte eine Blüte im Umkreis der Pager Hofschule; erlernt haben die Künstler sie nach dem Vorbild der manieristischen Malerei in Italien, wie sie z.B. der Römer Guiseppe Cesari (1568-1640) erfolgreich beherrschte. Auch erfuhr die Erforschung der Natur durch die Versammlung zahlreicher Gelehrter wie z.B. auch Mineralogen am humanistisch geprägten Hofe Rudolfs II. eine besondere Förderung, sodass diese räumliche Nähe inspirierend wirkte für die dortigen Hofmaler und Künstler.

Hans von Aachen (1552-1615), Joseph Haintz (1564-1609) or Hans Rottenhammer (1564-1625), these are the most famous painters who were commissioned by the Prague emperor Rudolf II to produce small-format paintings on precious stones in the years around 1600. Mostly these are extraordinary limestones which are known under the umbrella term 'alabaster', but also slate or - especially impressive - lapis lazuli. Their striking discolourations and grains were the inspiration and starting point for the depictions. The stones' smooth and hard surfaces allowed a particularly fine painting technique, in which the colourfulness of the material was also included in the composition of the picture. In this present plate, the cave in which the shepherds worship the Christ Child results from the swings of the stone grain.
This special painting technique, especially in its preciousness, flourished in the environment of the Prague Court School; the artists have studied it according to the model of Mannerist painting in Italy, as, for instance, successfully mastered by the Roman Guiseppe Cesari (1568-1640). The exploration of nature was also supported by the gathering of numerous scholars, such as mineralogists, at the humanistic court of Rudolf II, so that this spatial proximity had an inspiring effect on the painters and artists located at the court.
