6th-8th century AD. A bronze ewer with drum-shaped ribbed body and disc base, broad shoulder with radiating ribs, tapering neck, crozier-shaped applied handle with thumb-pad and chain to the removable lid; to the lower neck a band with three round panels attached by drawn-wire twists, each panel with repoussé image of a cloaked horseman with nimbus and one hand raised holding a cross. 1.2 kg, 25cm (9 3/4"). From a private Belgian collection; previously part of a private collection formed in Germany in the 1990s.
