Fine Japanese boxwood okimono (decorative sculpture) of Raiden, Shintogod of thunder, walking with his son, set on a carved rocky base, signedKogetsu. From the late Meiji period (1868-1912). The Spurlock Meum ofWorld Cultures at the University of Illinois has seven similar Kogetsuokimonos on display. (The last two pictures are two of the seven, the last photo is of Raiden with his Son on his back.) Raidenis represented as a devilish creature with a demonic face, two smallhorns, and claws on each foot. His name is composed of Rai (thunder) andDen (lightning). He is often a subject in Japanese decorative and finearts, in paintings of the Korin and Sosatsu schools. In thisinterpretation, he carries a sack and holds his son by the hand. He maybe consulting a sundial. This is an opportunity to own a meumpiece at reduced cost. Another Kogetsu Raiden and His Son wasrecently sold by Phillip Carrol Antiques for 3800. Boxwood is a very close-grained, dense, yellowish-brown hardwood. Carved figure weighs five ounces. 5 7/16" tall, 3" across, 2 5/8" deep
