2 Pieces of spectacular antique one of a kind takamori-e lacquer over wood tobacco box & tray by Kinjo Ikkokai III meiji-taisho era 1853-1912. Both w/ original tomobako (storage box) and original certificates of authenticity in Japanese script. Purchased in Japan during WWII at H. Hinishimura's lacquer factory antiques section. Includes brochures of factory and biness card. Box measures: 5 1/8" x 4 1/4" x 3" high decorated with raised flowers, butterfly, and wasp on black back ground and signed on bottom. Tray measures: 8 1/8" x 9 1/4" x 1" high raised floral decoration on black back ground signed and on bottom. The Ikkokai family of lacquer artist started in 1811 and in 1843 moved to Hiroshima. Ikkokai III was known for the takamoir-e technique and brought the ornamentation of boxes, pipe cases, and trays in takamori-e to its highest point. This technique was lost after his death until the 7th Kinjo Ikkokai in 1991.
