Grouping of sheet music and letters pertaining to the music of Francis Hopkinson (1737 - 1791), "our first American Composer." Included are three pieces of sheet music, as follows --- "Ode From Ossian's Poems for Voice and Harpsichord or Pianoforte" (G. Schirmer, New York 1920); pages numbered through 11, folded but not secured binding. --- "Hail, Columbia! The President's March" by his son, Joseph Hopkinson (1770 - 1842) (G. Schirmer, New York 1917); pages numbered 1 - 4, as a single folded sheet. --- "Colonial Love Lyrics, Six Songs by Francis Hopkinson, edited and augmented by Harold V. Milligan" (Schmidt, 1919); staple bound with pages numbered to 29. ALSO INCLUDED is a signed letter from Harold V. Milligan who is credited with discovering lost manuscripts of Francis Hopkinson's music, letters signed by Philip Berolzheimer the Chamberlain of the City of New York pertaining to the success of Hopkinson Memorial Concerts held throughout the city, a letter with original envelope on G. Schirmer Music Publishers letterhead. G. Schirmer, Inc. is the oldest active music publisher in the United States. ALSO INCLUDED are programmes from "The Mayor Hylan Peoples' Concerts Francis Hopkinson Memorial" and from "An Evening of Music of the Colonial Period includings songs by Francis Hopkinson The First American Poet-Composer" hosted by the Pennsylvania Society of the Colonial Dames of America. Within this last programme,there are Facsimilies of the "Seven Songs" title page, as well as the original dedication page from the previous lot. The image shown is of the very same dedication page (as evidenced by minor water damage) and proves the importance and scarcity of the item.
