Terence "PUB. TERENTII COMOEDIAE SEX. EX RECENSIONE HEINSIANA" (Amsterdam, 1658); full leather boards with replaced spine. Signed by Francis Hopkinson (1737 - 1791) with this note: "Fran.. Francis Hopkinson his Book given to him by David Martin (1696 - 1751 rubbed out but appears to say 'his master') in the year of our Lord 1751 September 15th." Martin was one of the earliest members of the American Philosophical Society, and one of the few who was not a resident of Philadelphia. Benjamin Franklin found that Martin was his principal antagonist at chess, and the Academy of Philadelphia (forerunner of the University of Pennsylvania) made Martin the Academy’s first rector and professor of Greek and Latin in 1750. There are minor doodles and sketches, including a small face and several Treble Clef symbols. From the Francis Hopkinson Family Archives
