A good and large mid-19th century Chinese carved and stained ivory chess set with intricate detail throughout, the figures with elaborately detailed robes and accessories, the rooks modelled as elephants carrying turrets, all on octagonal foliate carved bases, height of king approx 20cm. Additional Information Overall the set has survived in excellent condition considering the age and fragility of the material. The stained king has some small chips to his headgear, some of the weapons and accessories have been re-glued to the hands. There are some chips and nibbles to the other pieces particularly to the headgear of the pawns, some rubbing to the staining on the raised surfaces hands, handles, noses etc. The turrets on top of the elephants, three of the four have been re-glued to their bases but without apparent damage, more the natural degrading of the original binding agent. The stained elephant in particular has rubbing to the extremities and some surface abrasions. Some minor splits to the pierced work on the lower section of the white king, the upper section of the sceptre held by the red king has been reattached to the hand but without apparent damage.
