Important 19th Cent Empire Gilt Bronze and Ochre Marble Clock. Attributed to Sculptor Francois Masson (1745-1807). He was one of the most important French sculptors of the last third of the 18th Cent. Features a round bronze case that is set upon the knees of a female figure sculpted in white marble. The figure represents Urania, the muse of Astronomy. She is shown in a long dress and sandals, with her hands folded atop the clocks case. The woman is shown sitting on patinated bronze base decorated with gilt bronze friezes and further embellished with two sitting lions.. The enamel dial indicates the hours in Roman numerals and the minutes in Arabic numerals, with two bronze hands. The bronze bezel depicts signs of the zodiac.
