Description

Portrait of a gentleman, said to be Edmund Trench (1686-?) standing three-quarter length in a blue coat and a full length wig oil on canvas, in a period carved and gilt wood frame 124 x 101cm Footnote: The sitter is the grandson of his namesake Dr Edmund Trench (1608-1669) and the son of the Reverend Edmund Trench (1643-1688) by his wife Bridget Roberts (b. 1657), daughter of Sir Howland Roberts, 3rd Bt. (c.1634-1661). The sitter and his elder brother Samuel (d. 1741) both married daughters of Sir Thomas Roberts, 4th Bt. (1658-1706), Bridget and Jane respectively. Samuel died in the possession of the family manor of Ducketts in 1741 and his daughter, Sarah (1713-1753) married in 1745 John Berney of Bracon Hall, Norfolk. Provenance: By descent in the Berney family to the present owner Condition report: Oil on canvas which has been lined. The canvas tension is slack but the picture is in plane. The paint layers are in a good stable condition overall. A few scattered damages have been filled and retouched. There is minor flaking around some of the old fills. The varnish layer is degraded and blanched, giving the painting a pale, bleached appearance. Cleaning and removal of the old varnish would return the tone and clarity of the original paint layers below. The retouchings have retained their colour against the pale varnish so that they now stand out. Areas of retouching are mainly found in the trees in the background, the sitter's left hand and reinforcement of the buttons. The surface of the painting is matte and there is a layer of dirt across the surface. There are minor losses to the gilding on the frame.
