Circa 1917 finished charcoal by John Singer Sargent (American, 1856-1925), widely considered the leading portraitist of his day. The work is of Georges Clemenceau, French Prime Minister during the last part of WWI (1917-1920). Comes with an appraisal and report from David J. Sargeant of Washingtonian Appraisals done in 2014. Dimensions are: sight size, 23 1/4 inches tall X 17 inches wide; 59.05 cm tall X 43.18 cm wide. Frame size, 34 inches tall X 28 inches wide; 86.36 cm tall X 71.12 cm wide. All measurements are approximate. Condition: There is a 3 1/2" tear from the right edge that does not affect the art. The left edge under the mat has a small hole and tear, both tears have archival tape to the rear. There is toning to the paper under the mat with some edge wear. Slight crease to bottom left corner with a line of discoloration at the crease. Provenance: From a private Maryland collection.
