Gouache on cardboard. Portrayal of a young female poet dressed as Jeanne d’Arc with cuirass and pauldrons over a short skirt. Wearing a richly plumed, blue beret on her head. Holding a small sword in her right hand, the left hand resting on her hip. The top inscribed "Loise Labe". Under glass, in an old ripple moulding frame from the 17th century. Dimensions of picture 22.5 x 15.5, of frame 45 x 37.According to the handwritten notes on the back of the cardboard the portrait can be ascribed to the French courtier, poet, and portrait painter Nicolas Denisot (1515 - 1559).Louise Labé, French writer, was considered to be a highly emancipated woman at her time, she was not only educated in many subjects, but had also had taken riding and fencing lessons.
