A rare South German two-hand battle sword, circa 1540 Sturdy, double-edged blade of flattened hexagonal section, cut with shallow fullers on each side of the upper third. A brass-inlaid mark stamped on one side. The ricasso with triple fullers and two Pi marks struck on one side. Straight iron quillons with two large lateral guard rings. Chiselled décor of spirals, balusters and lozenges, the arms terminating in flat, spirally fluted knobs. Stepped grip, the original leather cover with incised floral ornamentation and decorative iron studs. The sturdy pommel with eight ribs and a spirally fluted, riveted button. Length 171 cm. Extremely rare, large battle sword dating from the time of the Schmalkaldic War.Condition: II
