A CAMBODIAN "LIFE OF BUDDHA" PAINTING Cambodia, 1900-1930. Distemper on cloth. The central image depicts Buddha meditating under the Bodhi tree and five monks praying. He is surrounded by oval reserves containing the historic phases of Siddhartha Gautama both before and after his enlightenment. Condition: With wear, soiling, minor creases, and small losses. Provenance: The collection of The Zelnik Istvan Southeast Asian Gold Museum. Institutional art collection in Belgium, acquired from the above. Dr. Istvan Zelnik, President of the Hungarian South and Southeast Asian Research Institute, is a former high-ranking Hungarian diplomat who spent several decades in Southeast Asia, building the largest known private collection of Asian art in Europe.
