French School, late 19th century A cloaked figure oil on board 70.5 x 56.5cm Provenance: Acquired by the vendor from a chateau in Brittany. Condition report: Oil on board. The paint layers are stable overall but appear to have suffered from wear or loss in the past due to passages of overpaint present. The overpaint is slightly crudely applied but acceptable from a normal viewing distance. Overpaint in the background has slightly darkened. An old varnish layer has been partially removed, this is evident around the sitter’s head where the yellowed remnants of the varnish are evident. The upper varnish layer is very glossy and even but has dust and fibres caught in the surface.
