5th century BC-1st century AD. A mixed group of three bronze ex-voto horse and rider figurines modelled in the round: one rider figure modelled seated, one arm held above the head, the other stretched in front of the body, detailing to head, face and clothing; one horse modelled advancing, right leg held at a right angle, tail held away from body; one horse modelled advancing, remains of top of right leg angled away from the body, tail held at an angle, broad neck, cropped mane. Cf. Rolland, H., Bronzes Antiques de Haute Provence, Paris, 1965, items 116, 246, for comparable examples. 74 grams total, 41-54mm (1 1/2 - 2 1/4"). Ex collection of a Surrey, UK, gentleman; acquired on the UK art market; previously on the European art market before 2000. Such figures were used in early Thracian horseman cult rituals and in a variety of ex-voto contexts. [3]
