4th century BC. A bronze ring with a wide hoop expanding towards the shoulders, oval sealing bezel with convex underside; impressed image of a bearded man to the side of the smooth bezel, wearing a Thessalian cap or helmet. Cf. Chadour, A.B., Rings. The Alice and Louis Koch Collection, volume I, Leeds, 1994, items 64-68, for type. 14.37 grams, 25.36mm overall, 19.65mm internal diameter (approximate size British O 1/2, USA 7 1/2, Europe 15.76, Japan 15) (1"). Property of a gentleman from Vienna; from his private collection formed since 1970. This classical Greek ring dates to the 4th century BC and bears an interesting engraving of a helmetted head on the side. The helmet shows the shape of a Thessalian cap, widely employed by the cavalry of the period, suggesting that this ring is from a military context.
