AD 200-600, London, 2011, p. 65 pl.12a, p.78 pls.8a-b,10; 99 pl.1. 6.18 grams, 29mm (1"). Ex collection of a Surrey, UK, gentleman; acquired on the UK art market; previously on the European art market before 2000. The gem shows the device of Abrasax (or Abraxas), a solar god that was common on gems and amulets during the 3rd and 4th centuries. He usually appears with the head of a cockerel, the body of a cuirassed Roman officer, and serpent-like legs, perhaps in turn symbols of the upper air, the earth and the underworld. In his right hand he usually holds a flail or club, and in his left is a round manual shield, (Cheiroskoutarion").
