2nd-4th century AD. A rectangular 'magical' jasper gemstone with intaglio image of armoured cock-headed anguiped divinity holding shield and flail, 'gnostic' inscription ?????A? (Abrasas = Abraxas) above and below; set in a rectangular silver frame with suspension loops, shallow geometric motifs over the frame; Greek letters ? and ? (Alfa and Omega) on the shield. The gem shows the device of Abrasax (or Abraxas), a solar god that was common on gems and amulets during the 3rd and 4th centuries. He usually appears with the head of a cockerel, the body of a cuirassed Roman officer, and serpent-like legs, perhaps in turn symbols of the upper air, the earth and the underworld. In his right hand he usually holds a flail or club, and in his left is a round manual shield, (Cheiroskoutarion").
