Description
Translation provided by Youdao
2nd-3rd century AD. A bronze statuette of Jupiter (Greek Zeus) standing nude, bearded, eyes indicated with shallow recesses, face framed by abundant hair, posterior modelled; cloak draped over left shoulder; weight carried on his right leg, with what remains of his left leg slightly bent; left arm bent, forearm raised, likely to have once held a sceptre and thunderbolt. See Rolland, H., Bronzes Antiques de Haute Provence, Paris, 1965, item 3, for type. 73.5 grams, 77.9mm (3"). Property of an Austrian private collector since the 1970s. Gallo-Roman work, of mediocre style, inspired to a Greco-Roman model. It can be compared with the Jupiter Conservator of the Commodus medallions. Similar bronzes are kept in the Leipzig University, and in the Art Museum of Genève.
