2nd century AD. A bronze appliqué modelled in the half-round; possibly representing the emperor Marcus Aurelius (161-180 AD), or more probably Commodus Lucius Aurelius (177-192 AD); detailing to hair, face, moustache and full curly beard; integral tapering square-section mounting pin to reverse. See Life Photo Collection, original id. TimeLife_image_110890149, for a similar bust; see the portait of Marcus in Palagyi, T., Facsady, A., Romains de Hongrie, Lyon, 2002; for a similar portrait from Carnuntum Beutler, F., Farka, C., Gugl, C., Humer, F., Kremer, G., Polhammer, E. (ed.), Der Adler Roms, Carnuntum und die Armee der Caesaren, Bad Voslau, 2017, p.169, item 20. 25.6 grams, 31mm (1 1/4"). Ex collection of a Surrey, UK, gentleman; acquired on the UK art market; previously on the European art market before 2000. Possibly a furniture mount, the small head is portraying clearly a member of the Antonine Dynasty. A possible comparison can be done with a portrait from a similar mount from Carnuntum, representing Marcus Aurelius, although the narrow face and the big nose, together with the large eyes, could be easily compared with the famous portrait of Commodus in the Musei Capitolini, Rome. From the other side, the narrow face and the stylistic rendering of the beard and hair are also akin to a limestone portrait of Marcus from Budapest (Palagyi & Facsady, 2001, p.27, fig.18, cat.2").
