1st-3rd century AD. A group of military fittings comprising: a lobate hinge shoulder fitting of a Lorica Segmentata of Newstead type; a peltate belt strap terminal or belt applique; a lunate pendant of a horse harness and the fragment of a second one; a possible fragment of a cart decoration and another possible belt fitting. See Aurrecoechea Fernandez, J., ‘Bronze studs from Roman Spain’ in Journal of Roman Military Equipment Studies, volume 7, 1996, pp.97-146, fig.21; Bishop, M., Lorica Segmentata, A Handbook of Articulated Roman Plate Armour, volume I, London, 2002, fig. 6.1, Appels, A. & Laycock, S., Roman Buckles & Military Fittings, Witham, Essex, 2007, p.96, ff.130, fig.AA14.63, p.145, no. AA15.37. 134 grams total, 29-43mm (1 - 1 3/4"). From a North Yorkshire collection formed since the 1980s; thence by descent. The rare fragment of the lobate hinge of the shoulder protection of a laminated lorica corresponds to the well known Newstead typology, in use from the late 1st century AD until the early 4th century AD, and in some provinces, like Hispania, still possibly employed at the beginning of the 5th century AD.
